I have always been a musical individual being shaped, persuaded, moved, inspired and often captivated by music of all kinds and forms - both listening and performing. I try to stay open-minded (more so in recent times than ever before) and even so much as listening to music in full that at first listen I would otherwise change, turn-off or criticize. The last three years I have primarily been listening to House Music (I have been getting into DJ'ing and such) - going from classic disco to classic house to current genres and anything I could get into and that I felt was musically or artistically moving or progressive and not just the most popular.
SO - that is what makes the following post significant - I just yesterday began rediscovering music I had been into right before I fell into House and golly it has been exciting!
Started with this one:
Solo album by Albert Hammond Jr (Strokes) Yours to Keep
Brief: Pop. Happy. Strokes-esq
Highlights: Cartoon Music for Superheroes
In Transit
Everyone Gets a Star
Call an Ambulance**(favourite)
Final: Simple, easy, lift your spirits
Lonesome Crowded West by Modest Mouse
Brief: For real fans this is THE album - its heavy, light, catchy, moody -it rocks!
Highlights: Convenient Parking
Lounge
Doin' the Cockroach** (favourite)
Cowboy Dan
Long Distance Drunk
Styrofoam Boots
Final: So many good songs and lyrics - experimental and jammy at times - straight forward and honest at other times - listen and learn
More Adventurous by Rilo Kiley
Brief: Light, folk meets twang meets indie, catchy
Highlights: Does He Love You?
Portions for Foxes
Ripchord** (favourite)
Love and War
A Man/Me/Then Jim
Final: Doesn't push any boundaries but it is enjoyable and soothing. Often times sweet and juicy but without asking too much of the listener. Ripchord was written the day Elliot Smith killed himself and it is about him - they were contemporaries and friends - note the link is a live version but its nearly the same as the album version.
One final note - Youtube DESTROYS audio - through compression and conversion and mathematical things doing with aliasing and Nyquist... well its complicated but please if you enjoy these songs - Support the artist! Buy their tracks on itunes (so they sound good!) or in a store or even better - go see them LIVE! when they come near you.
