Found music

I have had this post bouncing around my head since the last post - so here it is! Inspired by my lost music here are 3 albums - by the same artists - that I had not listened to (either at all or in depth) prior to the last post. BUT - they are of merit and in a way fit in with the whole Lost & Found theme.

Building Nothing Out of Something - Modest Mouse
Brief - This album is composed of songs that did not make their earlier albums - I suppose hence the title
All Night Diner
Positive Negative
Final - While it may seem easy to disregard an album made of songs that were otherwise deemed unfit for previous albums - This album is worth the listen to hear tracks that both typify Modest Mouse's style and give subtle hints at a slightly different side of them - but not too different. Give it a listen and if you want to be truly fair give it the Basso test - listen once straight through and listen a second time on random or shuffle and see if you don't get some songs stuck in your head.

Como Te Llama - Albert Hammond Jr.
Brief - The second solo album from Strokes guitarist Albert Hammond Jr.
Highlights - GfC
Rocket
Spooky Couch
Final - This album pushes boundaries and style more so than his first album while not retaining quite the same pop catchiness. Here we get to hear Albert really stretch his musical abilities and begin to define his own sound - while still being rock and strokes-esque - It is a real treat to hear this music and feel it as well - if nothing else put on Spooky Couch and melt away.

Take Offs and Landings - Rilo Kiley
Brief - The first album put out by Rilo Kiley in 2001
Highlights - Science vs Romance
Don't Deconstruct
Final - While their other album I wrote about (More Adventurous) was indeed more adventurous in production it is Take Offs and Landings that is musically more challenging. They are more creative with their songwriting and ask more from the listener. Some of the tracks are short interludes or "variations on a theme" of other songs on the album. While not one song particularly stands out like "Portions for Foxes" (off More Adventurous) the overall flow and craft of the album is strong and identifiable to Rilo Kiley.

Music Found through music Lost - Enjoy!

Lost Music

I am deeper than this. I can do better! Limitations are an excellent tool for an artist and I am taking the very title of my blog (Basso's Lost n Found) as a limitation. By trying to break out of the limitation I can express the full potential of my creativity.  Upward and onward!

I have always been a musical individual being shaped, persuaded, moved, inspired and often captivated by music of all kinds and forms - both listening and performing. I try to stay open-minded (more so in recent times than ever before) and even so much as listening to music in full that at first listen I would otherwise change, turn-off or criticize. The last three years I have primarily been listening to House Music (I have been getting into DJ'ing and such) - going from classic disco to classic house to current genres and anything I could get into and that I felt was musically or artistically moving or progressive and not just the most popular.

SO - that is what makes the following post significant - I just yesterday began  rediscovering music I had been into right before I fell into House and golly it has been exciting!

Started with this one:

Solo album by Albert Hammond Jr (Strokes) Yours to Keep
Brief: Pop. Happy. Strokes-esq
Highlights: Cartoon Music for Superheroes
In Transit
Everyone Gets a Star
Call an Ambulance**(favourite)
Final: Simple, easy, lift your spirits

Lonesome Crowded West by Modest Mouse
Brief: For real fans this is THE album - its heavy, light, catchy, moody -it rocks!
Highlights: Convenient Parking
Lounge
Doin' the Cockroach** (favourite)
Cowboy Dan
Long Distance Drunk
Styrofoam Boots
Final: So many good songs and lyrics - experimental and jammy at times - straight forward and honest at other times - listen and learn

More Adventurous by Rilo Kiley
Brief: Light, folk meets twang meets indie, catchy
Highlights: Does He Love You?
Portions for Foxes
Ripchord** (favourite)
Love and War
A Man/Me/Then Jim
Final: Doesn't push any boundaries but it is enjoyable and soothing. Often times sweet and juicy but without asking too much of the listener. Ripchord was written the day Elliot Smith killed himself and it is about him - they were contemporaries and friends - note the link is a live version but its nearly the same as the album version.

One final note - Youtube DESTROYS audio - through compression and conversion and mathematical things doing with aliasing and Nyquist... well its complicated but please if you enjoy these songs - Support the artist! Buy their tracks on itunes (so they sound good!) or in a store or even better - go see them LIVE! when they come near you.

Set 2

Caught off guard

We know you!

Yup!

Great Hair!

My personal favourite!

Set 1

Classic.

Can't believe this was a discard!

Overdressed?

Life's a Party!

Lost n Found for sure!

What should have been lost...

Instead of being a creep and following without posting I proudly present to you Basso's Lost n Found. As a lover of change I cannot promise what the future will hold but for now it will start like this. These pictures were discards that would otherwise have been thrown away (and probably should have) - but not with Basso around! So root through garbage I did! Well just the recycling in the library - whatever - judge all you want (or maybe now you're saying Ahh so thats what he was doing...) Found pictures is what they are and I typically look for the funny ones or ones of interest to me - like former classmates or faculty members.

To have some fun feel free to leave you own captions in the comments! If you can identify any of the people in the pictures (or what was going on) then bonus points to you! Finally feel free to leave links to other found pictures - but preferably pictures you physically found or took.

Hope you Enjoy!
